Comets fall in series opener at Aussie Spirit

KANSAS CITY, Mo.— The Aussie Spirit snapped a 15-game losing streak by defeating visiting Cleveland 4-1 at the Urban Youth Academy on Monday.

With the loss, the Comets extended their current losing streak to four games.

The Spirit scored a run in the bottom of the first when Shannon Keevers doubled with one out and scored on Jade Wall’s two-out single. Aussie added another in the second on a home run by Stacey McManus.

A two-run third closed out the scoring for the Spirit.

Stacey Porter drew a leadoff walk and scored on Wall’s single. Taylah Tsitsikronis, who also walked, then scored on Clare Warwick’s infield single.

Cleveland mustered just two hits off Aussie starter Ellen Roberts, who didn’t allow a run and struck out five in five innings.

The Comets put up one run in the top of the seventh off of Jordan Taylor on two hits and a walk.

Cao Yang singled, Jade Rhodes walked and Jiang Xinyue singled to knock in Cleveland’s lone run.

Randi Rupp took the loss for the Comets. She allowed four earned runs on five hits and struck out a pair in three innings. Devin Brown gave up five hits in three scoreless innings of relief.

Aussie and Cleveland will play again on Tuesday.
