CLEVELAND, OH (Oct. 16, 2019) – The Cleveland Comets and the Mexico Olympic National Softball Team announced on Wednesday their renewed commitment to compete in the 2020 NPF season.

The 2019 season was not only a successful one for the Comets, but for Mexico Softball on the international stage as well. Due to their partnership, the Comets saw their win total double from the previous year, bringing their record from (10-38) in 2018 to (20-22) in 2019.

Mexico also benefited tremendously from their experience in the National Pro Fastpitch League by playing against the world’s best competition for several months. Mexico Softball brought a tremendous amount of momentum into their Olympic Qualifier in Surrey, Canada this August, going undefeated, outscoring the total opposition 53-2, and defeating both 4th ranked Puerto Rico and 3rd ranked Canada on their way to punching Mexico’s first ever appearance in the Olympics in Women’s Softball.

“The Mexico Olympic Team is happy to announce that we will continue to work with the Cleveland Comets and the National Pro-Fastpitch league (NPF) in 2020 and for years to come,” stated Mr. Cruz Rolando Guerrero Castilla, President of Team Mexico. “Our team’s success at the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) America’s Olympic qualifier also belongs to our partners the Cleveland Comets and the NPF. Playing in the rigorous, high caliber 2019 NPF season helped us prepare and be ready to conquer the historic achievement of qualifying, undefeated, for the Olympic Games in Tokyo 2020. We understand that participating in the league will be the only way to continue to increase and maintain our high level of play, not only for Tokyo 2020, but towards Los Angeles 2028.”

The Comets look to continue building on their success this 2020 season by adding to an already talented roster.

“This is an exciting year,’ commented Comets General Manager, Stephen Dunn. “Everywhere you look, you will see world-class talent at every position on the field. From top to bottom, our focus this summer is to deliver a championship to the city of Cleveland, and to do everything we can to help prepare Mexico for the Olympics in their pursuit to bring back the Gold Medal. We are incredibly proud of our partnership with Mexico and we look forward to continuing to build on an already great foundation for years to come.”

In addition to an already rigorous NPF season, Mexico Softball anticipates playing in the following events in preparation for the 2020 Olympic Games:

“After a monumental summer for Team Mexico, we are extremely appreciative for the opportunity to have partnered with the Cleveland Comets during the 2019 National Pro Fastpitch season,” said Mexico and Comets All NPF player, Sashel Palacios. “Playing top caliber competition in the NPF was a catalyst for our Mexican National Team’s success during the Olympic Classifying tournament, which resulted in a berth for the 2020 Olympic Games. Team Mexico is indebted to our League Commissioner, Cheri Kempf, Comets ownership, General Manager Steve Dunn, Comets staff, its players and the Mexican Olympic Committee-CONADE for this triumphant year.  We look forward for our partnership with the Cleveland Comets during our highly anticipated 2020 Season.”
