Clutch hits, pitching lead Beijing to 3-0 win over Cleveland

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (June 13, 2018)—Allie Walljasper pitched a one-hitter and the Beijing Shougang Eagles scored all of their runs in the fourth inning to defeat visiting Cleveland, 3-0, at Embry Riddle Softball Stadium on Wednesday.

Walljasper walked just one and struck out seven. She now has allowed just one unearned run and two hits against the Comets this season with 12 strikeouts in 11 innings of work.

Chloe Miller singled in the second inning for the Comets, who also had two runners on base in the fourth on a walk and an error but couldn’t get the clutch hit to push across a run.

The Eagles, who improved to 10-8, finally broke the scoreless tie with five hits off Cleveland starter Devin Brown in the bottom of the fourth.

Xu Jia hit a sacrifice fly to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead and Xi Kailin later pinch hit and delivered a two-run single with two outs to push the lead to 3-0.

Walljasper then retired nine of the next 10 batters she faced to finish off the Comets.

Chen Jia and Ren Min both finished with two hits for Beijing.

Brown took the loss for the Comets. She allowed three earned runs on seven hits in 3 2/3 innings. Ping Fan pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings for Cleveland.

Beijing and Cleveland will meet again on Thursday at 7:00 p.m.
